What is tear trough or peri-orbital hollowness?
Patients presenting with tear trough deformity often complain of under eye dark circles or a tired, aged, and usually aesthetically-displeasing depression in that region. Some patients are so tired of their under eye depression or dark circles that they often try over the counter measures first before coming in for a professional opinion.
What are the options of treating the tear trough, under eye dark circles or the hollowness?
At NewSkin Laser Center, we use variety of different fillers to treat tear trough deformities and under eye hollowness. There are multiple fillers but the most popular ones are Restylane, Juvederm Ultra XC and Belotero.
Fillers injected with cannulas instead of needles are preferred. This causes less swelling, bruising and reduces the risk of injuring veins are arteries located close by.
Patients are very savvy consumers, and “Some want lower eyelid fillers and name the Belotero, Restylane or Juvederm during the consultation. The goal of treatment is to have an aesthetically-attractive lower eyelid with a relatively-smooth transition between the upper malar region into lower eyelid and nasal preseptal area without a definable transition point.
Treatment of dark eye circles and trough deformity was usually done with surgical interventions but with the invent of hyaluronic acid like Restylane, Juvederm or Belotero, Dr. Darush at NewSkin Laser Center uses advanced techniques and injection treatments to rejuvenate this area of the face and improve the appearance. Use of Cannula to inject the trough deformity has proven to cause less unwanted side effects like bruising or injuring nerves and veins.
Tear Trough Fillers injection:
Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are the primary treatment for the lower eyelids. Fillers like Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero can help to rejuvenate, volumize and smoothen the transition points. Once injected, volume in under eye area tends to make you appear youthfull and vibrant which we lose as we age. Under Eye Fillers can also help improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation that is often present in such cases.
Under Eye Bags and deformity Fillers Procedure:
It is a relatively easy procedure without any pain. At NewSkin Laser Center we use topical anesthetic (numbing) cream to make the procedure more tolerable. We also use a blunt tip cannula from CKC aesthetics to inject the under eye area to prevent any significant bruising or damage to the vasculature. Ice pack is applied right after the treatment to decrease risk of swelling as well.
Which filler is best for my under eye trough area?
At NewSkin Laser Center, every client will have a complimentary consultation with our physicians to choose the best filler for his individual needs. Candidates for this procedure may have puffy eyes, eye bags, and dark circles. A thorough exam of the under eye area will be performed as well as history of filler use in the past to see if there were any side effects. Being realistic with the outcome will be discussed and a customized treatment plan will be created. All risks and benefits will be explained prior to any procedure.
Dermal fillers in the area should be chosen based on their viscosity and G prime. Treatment of the tear trough deformity and under eye dark circles (given how delicate it is) is best to use a soft low viscosity spreadable gel (Juvederm ultra XC or Regular Restylane or Belotero). In some instances, only a professional can tell whether you may use a thicker gel like Juvederm ultra plus XC vs Restylane Lyft. These two products tend to last a bit longer but can cause nodules and lumpy appearance. Again, Dr. Alan Darush is an expert in choosing the right product depending on how much volume and how the injection technique will be used.
Another important thing to consider is that usually Juvederm products are more hydrophilic and tend to cause more swelling than Belotero or Restylane products. Please note that any time you manipulate or inject an area as delicate as the under eye area, the risk of swelling is present but it can be reduced by using products that are less hydrophilic.
What are the do's and don't do's or recovery time after under eye dermal filler?
Usually at NewSkin Laser Center, we use a blunt tip micro cannula to inject the under eye area as well as a low viscosity and less hydrophilic dermal filler like Restylane; therefore, causing less swelling, bruising and recovery is basically the same day. It is recommended not to exercise, rub, touch the area for 24hrs after the procedure. Although you may apply makeup, but manipulating or rubbing the area is prohibited.
Rest assure that a doctor is always available (24hrs) to answer any concerns after the procedure.
A follow up is recommended in 1-2 weeks to make sure that you are satisfied.
What if I'm not happy with the procedure?
The beauty of using products like Juvederm, Restylane or Belotero is that they can be dissolved using an enzyme called Hyaluronidases.
It tends to dissolve the hyaluronic acid within 24hrs. The injection is not painful and is well tolerated.
